"RFID goes Bluetooth" Scemtec Intelligent Handheld Reader for passive transponders

There is a new addition to the Scemtec handheld RFID product family.

The new SIH 5010 industrial reader was tailor-made for the current requirements of the oil and gas industry for tracking and tracing gas cylinders. The system was developed for use throughout the world under the raw conditions prevailing in the logistic systems for industrial gas bottles and vessels in the chemicals industry.

It will now to completely replace its predecessor, the Scemtec SIH 3001. The first 100 series readers are currently in hard industrial deployment around the globe with the AGA company. These will become the key element in future for RFID-supported vessel identification, which forms the basis of a modern loan pool management system!
The new SIH 5010 has its own battery and a Bluetooth interface. This enables it to be easily connected to every modern pocket PC with a Bluetooth interface. The advantage of this interface is that it dispenses with the cables and plugs linking to a handheld terminal which are a constant hazard in a raw industrial environment. The dedicated battery in the SIH 5010 now allows an RFID reader to be operated on handheld computers or pocket PCs, without placing undue loads on their power supplies and thus restricting the system operating times. The SIH 5010 programs and decodes the majority of 125 kHz transponders used on the market and is thus one of the so-called "Multi-Tag Readers" for ISO 18000-1 transponders in Scemtec's product range. The status of read-write operations, the system status or alarms issued by the RFID read-write device can be displayed to the user via 2 LEDs  or notified by means of a vibration alarm. This makes it possible to use this identification system without problem, even in the very noisy surroundings of heavy industry, such as harbour operations.
The Bluetooth concept enables the SIH 5010 to be used flexibly on various handheld terminals – even given a change of system or parallel operations with physically different systems from the world of "Windows Mobile", such as I-Packs or pocket PCs.
Scemtec intends to continue to expand its SIH series of products. The 125 kHz system is to be complemented in the next stage by an SIH system for 13.56 MHz for ( ISO 15693 / ISO 18000-3 ) and a UHF reader for ISO 18000-4. All of these systems will offer the benefits of a Bluetooth interface. The 125 kHz system ( SIH 5010-BT ) has been available from Scemtec as an OEM device since November. Scemtec is happy to receive inquiries on further developments for the HF and UHF systems. The first prototypes of the UHF / HF systems will be available as from Q1 2007.
